France once had a huge chunk of North America as part of its colonial possessions. Is it true that none of this now remains under French control?

New France was the area colonized by France in North America during a period beginning with the exploration of the Saint Lawrence River by Jacques Cartier in 1534 and ending with the cession of New France to Spain and Great Britain in 1763. At its peak in 1712 the territory of New France, also sometimes known as the French North American Empire or Royal New France, extended from Newfoundland to the Rocky Mountains and from Hudson Bay to the Gulf of Mexico.

The overseas collectivity of Saint Pierre and Miquelon is a self-governing territorial overseas collectivity of France, situated in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean near Newfoundland. It is the only remnant of the former colonial empire of New France that remains under French control, with a population of 6,080 at the January 2011 census.

Your answer is wrong! All of Canada is British even though Quebec speaks both English and French but no part of Canada is under France’s control!!! Please change your answer and give me my 10 stars please!!!

Great question and apparently somewhat controversial. The answer, however, is correct. These islands remain the last vestiges of New France. For those who were unaware, you may commence with invasion plans immediately.

Sorry Simone, David et.al. I believed this also until, while I was watching an episode of the Candian show, The Republic of Doyles, set in St. John, Newloundland, these two areas were mentioned. The two areas were Saint Pierre and Miquelon and they are a self-governing territorial overseas collectivity of France, situated in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean near Newfoundland, just as it says above. I then went and did more investigating and found it to be true.

I’m addition to the islands off the coast of Newfoundland, there are Caribbean islands which are considered part of North America and are under French rule (Guadeloupe and Martinique).

As an overseas collectivity, it has its own local government and a certain degree of autonomy in managing its internal affairs. However, it remains an integral part of France and is subject to French sovereignty and governance.

Bob Miller, Actually, ALL islands belong to some continent. For example, most of the islands, constituting the Caribbean (West Indies) are considered part of North America.
