Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. (born November 20, 1942) is an American politician who is the 46th and current president of the United States. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as the 47th vice president from 2009 to 2017 under Barack Obama and represented Delaware in the United States Senate from 1973 to 2009.

In January 1973, secretary of the Senate Francis R. Valeo swore Biden in at the Delaware Division of the Wilmington Medical Center. Both his sons Beau and Hunter were present at the ceremony. At the age of 30, he was the sixth-youngest senator in U.S. history.

On August 22, 2008, Obama announced that Biden would be his running mate for the coming US presidency. At the same time Biden was running for vice president he was also running for re-election to the Senate, as permitted by Delaware law. On November 4, he was re-elected to the Senate, defeating Republican Christine O'Donnell. Having won both races, Biden made a point of waiting to resign from the Senate until he was sworn in for his seventh term on January 6, 2009. He became the youngest senator ever to start a seventh full term.
