Where did Michelangelo find the perfect stones for his sculptures?
Carrara Italy. Michelangelo's choice of marble block was key to his sculptural process. He spent months in the quarry at Carrara to find the perfect stone for a subject, often to the detriment of the project itself.
What are your thoughts on this subject?

Keith Richard Mears, this is a fairly specialised question. I accept that Mt Rushmore is absurt, but Carrara vs Mt Vesvius is reasonable for a lay person

Swampy Marsh, not so sure. Rushmore has a granite carving, so sculpting might come to mind. However, I don't see anyone looking at a volcano and thinking marble.

Ron Harvey, The reason the Colosseum looks the way it does now is that during the Dark Ages people actually took parts of it for other building projects.

I had a feeling that Mount Vesuvius would draw more responses than Carrara, but the other two were really reaching out there. At least Rushmore got less than 3% (maybe they thought it was in Italy).
