In 1993, Brigitte Trogneux Auzière was a teacher of literature, drama and Latin at the 'Lycée la Providence' high school in the small city of Amiens situated 115 kilometres (71 mi) from Paris. At the time she was 39 years old, married and a mother of three.

During that year, an exceptionally gifted student attended her literature courses and took part in the school play she directed. Brigitte's daughter, Laurence, was also a classmate of the student, describing him as "the guy who knows everything about everything". That young student was the 15-year-old Emmanuel Macron.

Emmanuel and his teacher Brigitte fell in love that year and began a relationship which he would later describe as "a love often clandestine, often hidden, misunderstood by many before imposing itself".

When Emmanuel Macron's parents learned of the relationship, they became alarmed and decided their son Emmanuel would have to pursue his studies in Paris. Thus their son, a minor, and Brigitte, his love interest 24 years his senior were forced to separate.

At 16, Emmanuel Macron left Amiens in 1994, but vowed to Brigitte "I will come back to marry you." At the age of 18, he resumed his long-distance relationship with Brigitte, finally marrying her in 2007 after completing his studies.

As the first couple of France, a writer who knew them well describes their relationship: "Having his wife always by his side is vital to him. Emmanuel is ‘Brigitte dependent’ and Brigitte is ‘Emmanuel dependent’".
