How many stars were on the U.S. Flag when Abraham Lincoln took office as president?

When President Lincoln took office in 1861, there were 33 stars on the flag of the United States. At the end of Lincoln's presidency, there were 36 states, but only 35 stars on the flag.

The only President to serve under the flag with 36 stars on it was Andrew Johnson, who took office in 1865.

Bridy4u , Ever since 1818 a new version of the United States flag is only released on July 4th. Therefore the 34th star representing the state of Kansas was not added to the flag until July 4th, 1861, which was after Lincoln's inauguration.

Brad Schwebler, Kansas was admitted to the union on January 29, 1861, and the 34-star flag wasn't flown until 5 nonths and 6 days later on July 4, 1861. Lincoln took office on March 4, 1861, four months before the new flag was finally flown.
