How many US states are named after kings of European countries?
The four states are as follows. (1) Georgia: Named after King George II of Great Britain, it was the fourth state to ratify the United States Constitution, on January 2, 1788. (2) Louisiana was named after Louis XIV, King of France from 1643 to 1715. (3 and 4) North and South Carolina: the name Carolina dates back to October 30, 1629, when King Charles I granted a patent to Sir Robert Heath for the lands south of 36 degrees and north of 31 degrees, "under the name, in honor of that king, of Carolina." Carolus is Latin for 'Charles'.

You are right about Maryland, just wrong about its etymology. It was not named for Queen Mary Tudor. U.S. state, named for Henrietta Maria (1609-1669), wife of English King Charles I. And, as was brought to my attention, it does specifically say KINGS. Sexist post by the Cheeky Panda. lol

By the way, if you include queens, you need to include King Charles' wife, Queen Henrietta Maria, otherwise known as Queen Mary, for whom Maryland was named, bringing the total to 7 monarchs.

I would suggest that there are 7 and not 4. 2 Carolinas, 2 Virginias, Maryland, Louisiana and Georgia.

The correct answer is 6. The 'Virginias' Were Named for a Virgin Queen.
Virginia (and subsequently West Virginia) was settled by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1584. He named this new land after the English monarch of the time, Queen Elizabeth I, the Virgin Queen.
