How many US states are not in North America?
Hawaii, the 50th and most recent state of the United States of America, is the only U.S. state located in Oceania and the only one composed entirely of islands. It is the northernmost island group in Polynesia, occupying most of an archipelago in the central Pacific Ocean. Hawaii is the only U.S. state not located in the Americas.

When did Puerto Rico become a state? The question does not apply to Puerto Rico because it is a US territory, NOT a state.

Fact check that. It is (Hawaii) in the Northern Pacific ocean near the Tropic of Capricorn and above the equator. However, Fcowell that is correct. The Polynesian Islands which are considered part of Hawaii are an island group in Oceania.

You are incredibly obtuse. All you have done here is shown me a picture of the contiguous states, also known as "the lower 48". The "contiguous states" are the states that abut (touch or border) at least one other state. Alaska and Hawaii each abut no other states so they are non-contiguous.
I will show you a picture of North America. All brightly colored land on this map is part of the continent of North America. If the land appears in gray, it is not North America.
North America includes Greenland, Canada, the US, Mexico, the 7 nations of the region known as Central America, as well as all the nations, territories, and possessions of the Caribbean Sea.
If you will notice, Alaska is shown in bright orange, as are the lower 48 states because they are all part of the US.
Please take note that, while Alaska is indeed separated from the lower 48, it is still part of the North American land mass, separated from Russia, in Asia, by the Bering Strait.
Although Alaska was previously OWNED by Russia, it was NEVER PART of Asia.
You stand corrected. I rest my case.

Wrong. The question did not ask about contiguous states (which means all connected), it asked about the north American continent. Alaska is part of the North American continent. It is not connected to Russia. Mainland Alaska and mainland Russia are separated by about 55 miles. That part of Russia is on the Asian continent, it is not a continent by itself.
Yes, Alaska touches Canada, which is also in North America.
