"I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" is an autobiography written by American writer and poet Maya Angelou in 1969. Maya Angelou (Marguerite Annie Johnson), was born in April 4, 1928 - died May 28, 2014. Angelou's parents got divorced when she was very young, and later she and her elder brother, Bailey, were sent to live with their grandmother, Anne Henderson, in Stamps, Arkansas. As an African American, Maya Angelou experienced racial prejudice and discrimination in Arkansas. At the age of eight, while living with her mother, Angelou is sexually abused and raped by her mother's boyfriend, named Freeman.
