The Southern Ocean, also known as the Antarctic Ocean or the Austral Ocean, comprises the southernmost waters of the World Ocean, generally taken to be south of 60° S latitude and encircling Antarctica. As such, it is regarded as the fourth-largest of the five principal oceanic divisions: smaller than the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans but larger than the Arctic Ocean. This ocean zone is where cold, northward flowing waters from the Antarctic mix with warmer sub-antarctic waters.

I beg to differ with those disputing Southern Ocean. This is a relatively recent change. And ARCTIC refers to the NORTH pole, not the south.

National Ocean Service - define the 5 oceans of the world as Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic and Southern. That is the correct and current definition. All you sore losers and naysayers need to research your facts before showing your ignorance and complaining. Southern Ocean is correct - fact, get over it!

Thw question and answer are correct. Every nautical chart of the region calls the area the Southern Ocean. Many of us have been there. There are FIVE oceans.

for me it was a guess between the southern ocean or also known as the southern pacific. i went with what it is better known as. I'm also aware that at some point the southern ocean becomes the southern pacific. anyway got it right.
