Samia Suluhu Hassan was born on 27 January 1960 in Makunduchi, a town located the southeastern tip of Unguja, otherwise known as Zanzibar Island.

The Zanzibar archipelago merged with mainland Tanganyika on 26 April 1964 and the unified country is known as Tanzania, an economically and politically important country in East Africa.

Suluhu is a member of the ruling social-democrat Chama Cha Mapinduzi party of Tanazania and became the country's first female vice-president following the 2015 general election. Following the death of President John Magufuli on 17 March 2021, Suluhu took office as president on 19 March 2021. She has become the first female president of Tanzania.
