In Greek mythology, Poseidon was the god of the sea, second in order of significance and power to his brother Zeus, the sky and thunder god, ruler and king of the Greek gods. As one of the 12 Olympians, Poseidon was also the god of horses responsible for their creation.

In the ancient Greek world, the gods and goddesses helped the Greeks understand their world explaining everything from creation to death. One legend of the Greek mythological beliefs attributed to Poseidon is the formation of one of their favorite and most useful animals- the horse. It tells the saga of Poseidon who became smitten with his sister Demeter, also one of the 12 Olympian gods.

Because she was not immediately entranced by her bother’s advances, she asked that he spend some time creating the most beautiful animal in the world. When Poseidon eventually created the horse, he became the god of the animal as well as the god of the sea.

Demeter was the goddess of agriculture, fertility, sacred law and the harvest. Circe was the goddess of magic who transformed her enemies, or those who insulted her, into beasts. Aphrodite was the goddess of love and beauty. Nike was the goddess of victory, known as the Winged Goddess of Victory.
