Megaera is the name of one of the three Furies of Greco-Roman mythology. Her name means "jealous one". She punishes crimes relating to the breaking of oaths and infidelity, particularly marital infidelity. Her parentage is disputed; her parents may be Nyx and Erebus, or she may be born from the blood of Ouranos when he was castrated by Cronus.

In modern French (mégère), Portuguese (megera), Modern Greek (μέγαιρα), Italian (megera) and Russian (мегера), this name denotes a jealous or spiteful woman – Google translates all five as "shrew".
