In Mary Shelley's original novel, Dr. Frankenstein does not have an assistant. The hunchbacked assistants Igor and Fritz were introduced in a series of 'Frankenstein' films during the 1930s and 1940s.

Igor, or Ygor, was introduced in the film 'Son of Frankenstein' (1939) and reappeared in 'The Ghost of Frankenstein' (1942). He was played on screen by Bela Lugosi (1882-1952), best remembered for his role in 'Dracula' (1931). The character is a stereotypical mad scientist with a physical deformity. In the first 'Frankenstein' film (1931), the assistant was called Fritz but later films renamed him Igor. There are no characters named Igor or Fritz in the original Mary Shelley novel of 1818.

Mary Shelley wrote 'Frankenstein' at just 19 years old following a ghost story competition between herself, Percy B. Shelley and Lord Byron. Following the eruption of Mount Tambora in 1815, regions of the Northern Hemisphere experienced cold weather and gloomy skies, which made the perfect setting for stories such as 'Frankenstein'.

'Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus' is about a creature produced by a strange scientific experiment by the scientist Victor Frankenstein. He stitched together parts of dead bodies of to create the monster, which he brought to life during an electrical storm. The monster ran away and spent years looking for a place in the world, but most humans were afraid of it.
