A "medicane" is a term for a tropical-like cyclone that occurs in the Mediterranean sea. The word is a combination (or portmanteau) of Mediterranean and hurricane. The term "tropical-like cyclone" is used to describe a tropical cyclone that develops outside of the tropics (areas north of the Tropic of Cancer, 23°26′12.1″ N, or south of the Tropic of Capricorn 23°26′12.1″ S). However, the formation of this type of storm does not mean it will form a hurricane as seen forming in the tropical region of the Atlantic ocean during the annual North Atlantic hurricane season.

Medicanes tend to have a radius between 40 to 120 miles (70 to 200 km) and can last anywhere between 12 hours to 5 days. Wind speeds of up to 89 miles per hour (144 km/h) has been seen with these types of storms. Medicanes have less time to build in intensity and they tend to remain weaker than typical North Atlantic hurricanes.
