In the 1983 film "A Christmas Story", the department store that has what Ralphie wants in its window is Higbee's. This is a story which is presented in a series of vignettes. Based on the humorous writings of author Jean Shepherd, this fun holiday movie follows the wintry exploits of youngster, Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley), who spends most of his time dodging a bully (Zack Ward). The ideal Christmas gift for Ralphie is a Red Ryder air rifle. Frequently at odds with his cranky dad (Darren McGavin) but comforted by his doting mother (Melinda Dillon), Ralphie struggles to make it to Christmas Day with his glasses and his personal hopes intact.

In the end, Ralphie tells us that this Christmas was his best. From Higbee's Department Store, he got the best present he had ever received or would ever receive.

Warren Trimble, I remember Higbee's very well. We use to shop there all the time in the 1950's. I loved that store!

Richard D. Boyle, he makes a cameo appearance as the man in line to see Santa that tells Ralphie that the line Ralphie an Randy just go into “ENDS here, it BEGINS over there” and points over his shoulder to the far side of the store. 😂😃

Jean Shepherd, who wrote the story back in the 1940s, was the adult Ralphie who did the narration in the film. When I first saw the film on first run in the theater, I recognized his voice instantly and exclaimed loud enough for dozens of people seated near me to hear, “That’s Jean Shepherd!” He was the best radio story teller in the history of radio and I don’t think I ever missed listening to him in my small town in northern Indiana when I was growing up in the ‘40s. What a movie. What a memory.
