Kathleen Turner was the uncredited voice of the animated character Jessica Rabbit in this live action/animated film. Set in 1947 Los Angeles, cartoon characters exist and act in cartoon films as actors. The characters (known as "toons") live in Toontown that is owned by Marvin Acme. The head of Maroon Studios (which produces cartoon films) is concerned about the behavior of one of his stars, Roger Rabbit (voiced by Charles Fleischer). Through the efforts of humorless, toon hating human private eye Eddie Valiant (played by Bob Hoskins), Roger's wife, Jessica Rabbit is found to be "playing patty-cake" with Marvin Acme (Stubby Kaye). After this comes to light, Acme is found dead, with Roger Rabbit as the prime suspect.

Roger goes into hiding. Eddie Valiant and Roger are pursued by Judge Doom (Christopher Lloyd), the superior court judge of Toontown, who uses a liquid known as "The Dip" to destroy toons. Doom stands to benefit financially if Toontown is eliminated, the mysterious Cloverleaf Industries (which Doom owns) recently bought Maroon Studios, followed by the murder of R.K. Maroon. Doom is uncovered as being a toon, and the one behind the murders of Acme and Maroon. Roger and Eddie stops Doom from destroying Toontown and Roger finds Maroon's will which revealed that Toontown reverts ownership to the toons themselves on Maroon's death.

The movie was a commercial and critical success, winning three competitive Academy Awards, plus a Special Achievement Academy Award.
