The hugely popular and often repeated ITV costume drama, "Upstairs Downstairs" ran from 1971-1975. It concentrated on the lives of the aristocratic Bellamy family and their servants.

The imperious but kind-hearted Lady Marjorie (portrayed by Rachel Gurney) was the first wife of the MP Richard Bellamy. There is some discrepancy about her date of birth in the series, variously given as 1860 and 1864. Revelations occur about a tempestuous past, and at one point, only a daring masquerade enacted by her servants Sarah (who also had an affair with her son James) and Thomas saved her reputation. She had two children with the reliable if rather stolid Richard - a son, James, and a daughter, Elizabeth.

As a passenger on the ill-fated RMS Titanic in April 1912 she died a tragic if heroic death - refusing to leave the side of a little girl she was looking after. She handed her jewel case to her faithful maid, Roberts, telling her to look after it. Roberts was also presumed dead in the disaster, but turned up alive, though with her mind forever damaged.

Richard subsequently remarried a woman called Hazel, but although they were happy, we are left in no doubt that Marjorie was the real love of his life.
