The Intrepid Class Starship USS Voyager was constructed at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards orbiting Mars and was launched from Earth Station McKinley on stardate 48038.5 in 2371.

With a length of 343m, width of 116m and a mass of 700,000 tonnes, it is a lot smaller than the Galaxy Class Enterprise featured in "Star Trek The Next Generation"

Voyager was one of the earliest starships of this class constructed and it featured a number of technological innovations that had become available in the 2370s: bio-neural circuitry, variable geometry warp nacelles, and an Emergency Medical Holographic program were only a few of Voyager's notable technical advancements. The vessel was also the first to test the class 9 warp drive in deep space.

In the pilot episode of this third spin-off TV series, "Star Trek: Voyager" (1994-2001); after "Star Trek - The Next Generation" (1987-1994) and "Star Trek - Deep Space Nine" (1992-1999); an unknown force flings the USS Voyager to the other side of our Galaxy, thus begins their seven-season journey home to the Alpha Quadrant.
