Made from a soft, fluffy staple fiber, cotton grows in a boll around the seeds of the plant, (yes, boll, i.e. the rounded seeds capsule of plants such as cotton or flax). The fibers of cotton are hollow and upon close inspection resemble twisted ribbon.

It is easy to sew with, making it great for all beginners and advanced sewers alike. There are also many different types of cotton with different weights, weaves, prints, patterns, etc.

The most common top-weight cottons are voile, batiste, shirting, lawn, quilt-weight, poplin and gauze. Popular bottom-weight cottons are twill, canvas, plain-weave, velveteen, corduroy and denim. It can also be mixed with spandex making it great for pants, jackets, dresses, tank tops, and skirts that move with a person.
