In which church did Felipe, heir to the Spanish throne, marry Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano in May 2004?

The marriage of the heir to the Spanish throne, Felipe de Borbon, Prince of Asturias and Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano took place at the Almudena Cathedral (“Santa María la Real de La Almudena”) on 22 May 2004. After the wedding, she was known as "Princesa de Asturias".

Since the abdication of his father King Juan Carlos I in June 2014, Felipe is the current Spanish monarch, known as King Felipe VI. His wife is known as Queen Letizia.

Although the Catholic Spanish monarchy moved from Toledo to Madrid in 1561, and the groundbreaking for the cathedral commenced on 4 April 1883, it wasn’t completed until 1993 and consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 1993. The architects were Francisco, Marquis of Cubas and Fernando Chueca Goitia.

The massive cathedral, dedicated to the Virgin of Almudena, is the current seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madrid. Located opposite the Royal Palace, it is a splendid example of Neo-classical, Neo-Gothic revival and Neo-Romanesque style.

Inside, pop-art decor and statues by contemporary artists, remain unusual features among European Catholic cathedrals. A 16th-century image of the Virgen de la Almudena can be seen in the crypt. Its length is 102m. and the width of the nave is 12.5m. The uncommon feature of the church is the location of the cross, which is North-South, instead of the usual East-West.
