In which city is the Grand Canal?

The Grand Canal is a channel in Venice, Italy. It forms one of the major water-traffic corridors in the city.

One end of the canal leads into the lagoon near the Santa Lucia railway station and the other end leads into the basin at San Marco; in between, it makes a large reverse-S shape through the central districts (sestieri) of Venice. It is 3.8 km (2.4 mi) long, and 30 to 90 m (98 to 295 ft) wide, with an average depth of 5 metres (16 feet).

The Grand Canal (Irish: An Chanáil Mhór) is the southernmost of a pair of canals that connect Dublin, in the east of Ireland, with the River Shannon in the west, via Tullamore and a number of other villages and towns, the two canals nearly encircling Dublin's inner city. I should know, it flows outside my door!

Cheryl Perkins, I did, in winter 1973. It was a wistful experience walking the often wet, uncrowded calles and fondamentas. A wander along the deserted beach at the Lido in the cold and damp, the sea mist hanging over the Adriatic, was absolutely marvellous. If you haven't seen it, try to obtain a copy of the film of Thomas Manne's "Death in Venice". The atmosphere in it, backed by the music of Gustav Mahler, is truly fantastic.

mlhoover, while Venice does continue to sink due to tectonic plates shifting below the Italian coast, climate change IS a factor according to Venetians. The failure of politicians to complete a scandal-ridden billion dollar flood barrier system has left the city vulnerable to both.
