According to Italian folklore, on the eve of Epiphany, 5th January, an ugly witch called Befana travels around Italy delivering presents to children, in a similar style to Santa Claus. The story says Befana fills the socks of good children with gifts like candy, but leaves a lump of coal for children who have been bad. The story also claims Befana will sweep the floors of each house she visits, thus sweeping away the problems of the past year.

Befana is usually portrayed as a broomstick-riding witch, wearing a black shawl and carrying a bag full of gifts. She is often covered in soot because she enters each houses through the chimney.

One Christian legend claims Befana was visited by the biblical magi, who asked for directions to where the Son of God was born. After providing them with shelter for the night, the magi invited her to join them on the journey, but she declined, saying she was too busy cleaning her house. Later, Befana changed her mind and tried to follow the magi, but she never found them. To this day, Befana is searching for the magi and baby Jesus. On her way, she visits all the good children, giving them toys and candy.

Another tradition says Befana does not wish to be seen by the people she visits. If anyone catches a glimpse of her, she will give them a thump with her broomstick.
