The H. J. Heinz Company is an American food processing company headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The company was founded by Henry J. Heinz in 1869. Heinz manufactures thousands of food products in plants on six continents, and markets these products in more than 200 countries and territories. The company claims to have 150 number-one or number-two brands worldwide.
Since 1896, the company has used its "57 Varieties" slogan; it was inspired by a sign advertising 21 styles of shoes, and Henry Heinz chose the number 57 even though the company manufactured more than 60 products at the time.

Grant McIntosh, Glad you called it tomato sauce. I'm from the UK and regardless of brand names we grew up calling them all tomato sauce. Never ever heard the word ketchup until I came to Canada..

Irene Townsend, No actually a shoe company had had a similar ad, and Heinz thought it did sound great. Heinz already manufactured 60 products but it sounded better to say 57!

Heinz 57 was called that because of 57 ingredients in the sauce. Not because they manufactured 57 items.

From my memory when I was young, Heinz 57 was from when the company got to making 57 different various products, at least that's what we were told. Now it is just a saying for anything with a variety of things though it is mainly used for animals that have multiple breeds in them, mostly dogs,

From the comments saying that people are glad that Germany wasn't an option, it seems obvious that Heinz is huge in its native USA and the UK only. The UK eats more Heinz baked beans than any other country in the world, and Heinz Ketchup is by far the biggest selling tomato sauce in the UK.
