Mount Aconcagua, with a height of 6,962 m (22,838 f) above sea level, is the highest summit in the Americas, as Denali, in North America, is 6,194 m (20.157 f). It is located in the “Cordillera Principal” or “Main range” of the Andes, within the Mendoza Province, Argentina, and lies 112 km (70 mi) northwest of its capital, the city of Mendoza, about five km (3.1 mi) from San Juan Province and 15 km (9.3 mi) from the international border with Chile.

Swiss Matthias Zurbriggen was the first mountaineer who reached the summit of Aconcagua, on January 14, 1897. Nicolás Plantamura was the first Argentinian who made it to the summit in 1934. Aconcagua is considered an "easy" high altitude peak. However, Aconcagua is believed to have the highest death rate of any mountain in South America – around three a year – which has earned it the nickname “Mountain of Death”. More than a hundred people have died on Aconcagua since records began.

Mount Aconcagua was declared a “protected natural area” by the Argentinian government in 1983. A mummy of more than 450 years, was found in 1985, on the southwestern edge at 5,300 m of altitude. The hill and its surroundings constitute the Aconcagua Provincial Park. A reserve has been created in order to promote and preserve the pristine qualities that surround this mountain, its flora, its fauna, its water sources, and its archaeological sites.
