The Mourne Mountains are a granite mountain range in County Down in the south-east of Northern Ireland. They are designated an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' and proposals have been made to make it Northern Ireland's first national park. Part of the mountain range is owned and looked after by the National Trust.

The name 'Mourne' is derived from 'Múghdhorna', the name of a Gaelic clan. Some of the individual mountains contain the word 'Slieve' in their name, which comes from 'sliabh', the Irish word for 'mountain'. Whilst some of the mountains, such as Slieve Donard and Slieve Lamagan, have Irish sounding names, there are a few curious names, including Pigeon Rock, Percy Bysshe, and the Devil's Coach Road. The highest mountain is Slieve Donard at 850 m (2,790 ft).

The mountains feature in a song written by Percy French in 1896 called 'The Mountains of Mourne'. The mountains are also mentioned in John Lennon's song 'The Luck of the Irish' (1972). Parts of the television series 'Game of Thrones' was filmed in the Mourne Mountains, and the mountain range is said to have inspired C. S. Lewis to create the mythical world of Narnia for his series 'The Chronicles of Narnia'.

County Down is one of six counties in Northern Ireland. It is approximately 2,448 km² (945 square miles) with an estimated population of 516,000.
