The towns of Differdange and Dudelange are to be found in Luxembourg. Although the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is classed as a microstate, it is by far the largest of the European nations to be thus classified. In 2019 it was officially recorded as having a population of 634,730, and though by far the largest percentage of the population is to be found in the capital city, also called Luxembourg, the two towns referred to both have a population of over 20,000. Both are situated near the French border. In days gone by they were important from an industrial point of view, especially concerning the steel industry, but now they concentrate on tourism and cultural activities.

The country itself is an old one, with the first historical records dating from 963 CE. It later became part of the Habsburg Empire, and was recognised as an independent state in its present form at the Congress of Vienna in 1815. It is a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy, and home to many European institutions.
