Golda Meir (born Golda Mabovitch, 1898-1978) was the fourth Prime Minister of Israel. She was born in Kiev in the former Russian Empire, now the Ukraine. Whilst Meir was Israel's first and, as of 2021, only female prime minister, she was the world's third female prime minister.

In 1969, Golda Meir became Prime Minister of Israel after serving as Minister of Labour and Foreign Minister. She was nicknamed the "Iron Lady" of Israel's politics several years before the name became associated the British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher.

The two biggest events during Meir's time as prime minister were the murder of eleven Israeli athletes at the 1972 Summer Olympic Games and the 1973 Yom Kippur War. The war came as a surprise to Israel when Egypt and Syria attacked on the Jewish day of repentance.

After questions about her handling of the war, Meir left her job even though she was not to blame for the problems with the war. Former Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion used to call Meir "the best man in the government". She was often portrayed as the "strong-willed, straight-talking, grey-bunned grandmother of the Jewish people."
