Osborne House is a former royal residence in East Cowes on the Isle of Wight, England. It was in purchased by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1845. Later in life, the Queen used the house as somewhere to retreat away from public. She was staying there when she passed away on 22nd January 1901. Following her death, her son, King Edward VII, gifted the house to the nation.

For some time, Osborne House was used as a naval training school, then as a convalescent home for officers. During the Second World War, Adolf Hitler insisted that the house was not to be bombed because he wanted to use it as a post-war retreat.

In 1954, Queen Elizabeth II allowed the first floor rooms in the house to be opened to the public. In 1986, English Heritage took over the management of Osborne House and opened the second floor of the house to the public in 1989.

Queen Victoria often spent Christmas at Osborne House. Following Christmas in 1900, the Queen felt weak and unwell, and by mid-January she was dazed and confused. She died at the age of 81 with her son Edward VII and eldest grandson, Emperor Wilhelm II, by her side.
