Well it is Autumn over here and starting to cool down so it is time for me to be a bear and hibernate for 6 months, yes I know winter is only for 3 months but I only want to wake up when the temperatures are higher then they are now.

Penni, I couldn't disagree more. Most deciduous trees drop their leaves in the fall with the exception of certain oaks which tend to hold their brown leaves well into winter. In New Jersey, where I grew up, we raked leaves from late October into early December. By Christmastime, the trees were bare. Raking leaves and snowstorms never coincided.

Karin Johansson, The word "fall" means other things to Americans as well. What's your point? The fact is, it's not "only Americans" who say "fall". Although both "fall" and "autumn" stem from Britain, "autumn" was the more popular word for a long time. Both have had their ups and downs in popularity. It wasn't until the 1800s that American English and British English took unofficial stances on these words: "fall" is generally the word of choice in the U.S. and "autumn" in Britain Both words are used in American and British English, but "fall" occurs more often in American English. "Autumn" is considered the more formal name for the season in the US. BTW, Canadians are just as likely as Americans to use fall. Australians also say "fall". Although there are quite a few instances of "Fall" in Australian publications, Australian writers seem to favor autumn by a significant margin.

earlepg, I think she might have been embarrassed by her own comment after seeing my response to it and deleted hers. I've seen this kind of thing happen before, when, after my response to a comment filled with misunderstanding or false impressions, the light bulb suddenly comes on and their comment gets deleted.

Autumns, unless you live in an area that is already "wintwer-ish" is when the trees show off all the colorful foliage, so I do not get this one. Winter is when they drop all the leaves!
