In which town did Billy Butlin open his first holiday camp in the UK in 1936?

Butlin's inspiration for his own holiday camp empire came quite by chance. He was really disappointed by an unhappy holiday in his youth. Once his landlady had locked him out of his bed and breakfast accommodation. Would you be surprised to know that it was normal practice at the time?

However, this incident inspired Billy to open his own holiday camp. The first one was opened in 1936 in Skegness. It was the first step to his success in developing amusement parks.

What to do with all that surplus equipment when the war was over? Use it to provide a cheap, basic, holiday package for war-weary city dwellers.
