John Wayne won an Academy Award for which movie?

I really liked True Grit and the Shootist. I also enjoyed Rooster Cogburn. But my all time favorite was and still is The Quiet Man.

I'll bet that my first wife is STILL furious about John Wayne's Oscar. She vehemently believed that Dustin Hoffman should have won for his role as Ratso Rizzo in "Midnight Cowboy."

One of my favorite John Wayne movies along with McLintock, The Cowboys and The Sons of Katie Elder.

kotakat, that's the Oscar winner for sure. In "True Grit" the pinto horse who jumps the fence with a huge John Wayne riding hum is my nominee for the Oscar.

He should have got one for "The Shootist" - his finest part, beautifully acted.

Sindy , I went to Carden Hall with Ethan and Marissa, Ethan's younger sister. Ethan was in my younger brother John's class and Marissa was in my sister Lesley's class. I thought Ethan likely went to Harbor High, since I don't recall seeing him at Corona Del Mar HS with me or my brother.

It was when he accepted his Oscar that he said that if he knew putting on an eye patch would get him an Oscar, he would have put one on earlier. In an answer below someone got that wrong. Yay me.
