Maracanã Stadium is an association football stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The stadium was opened in 1950 to host the FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) World Cup, in which Brazil was beaten 2–1 by Uruguay in the deciding game, in front of a still standing record attendance of 199,854 spectators, on 16 July 1950.

After its 2010–2013 renovation, the rebuilt stadium currently seats 78,838 spectators, making it the largest stadium in Brazil and the second in South America after Estadio Monumental in Peru.

The stadium is mainly used for football matches between the major football clubs in Rio de Janeiro, including Flamengo, Fluminense, Botafogo, and Vasco da Gama. It has also hosted a number of concerts and other sporting events.

Might have been more of a challenge had the answer options been Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Portugal, or even Mozambique. To the average individual Spanish and Portuguese are sufficiently similar to make any former colony of the two kingdoms on the Iberian Peninsula a viable option.

konrad, The reason that they lost the semi final by such a margin, was because Neymar Jr had died. Or at least that's what you would have thought before the match. He'd got injured prior to the match and was ruled out from playing. David Luiz was visibly close to tears holding up his shirt whilst the anthems were being played!

Maracana is a cherished memory for Uruguayans. In the 1950 World Cup final match, the humble Uruguayan team beat Brazil 2 - 1, winning the first Jules Rimet trophy. It is not a good stadium for the Brazilian soccer team, that digested seven goals, also playing at home, against the German team than eventually won the World Cup..
