Marian Anderson was an American contralto and one of the most talented singers of the 20th century. Music critics said that her voice was a rich contralto of extraterrestrial beauty. She spent most of her singing career performing in concert and with famous orchestras throughout the United States. Anderson was often offered roles with opera companies but she declined them as she had no training in acting. However, it was she who became the the first person of color to perform at the Metropolitan Opera in Giuseppe Verdi's Un ballo in maschera.
