Michael Caine won his first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Woody Allen's 1986 movie "Hannah and Her Sisters". The film is an American comedy-drama and tells the intertwined stories of an extended family over two years that begins and ends with a family Thanksgiving dinner.

"Hannah and Her Sisters" was written and directed by Allen and was produced by Robert Greenhut. Allen also plays the role of Mickey, Hannah's ex-husband; he stars along with Mia Farrow as Hannah, Michael Caine as her current husband, and Barbara Hershey and Dianne Wiest as her sisters. In the movie, the plot is concerned with two Thanksgivings two years apart. During this period, Hannah's husband falls in love with her sister Lee, while her hypochondriac ex-husband rekindles his romantic and impractical relationship with her sister Holly.

Noted movie critic Roger Ebert said, "The movie is the best that Allen has ever made. It is organized like an episodic novel, with acute little self-contained vignettes adding up to make a very clever big picture." Ebert also said, "This film deserves its big success at the box office." Grossing $40.1 million US dollars on a budget of $6.4 million, the film has triumphed.

The film was nominated for 7 Academy Awards and won 3: Best Original Screenplay,

Best Supporting Actor (Caine), and Best Supporting Actress (Wiest). It didn't win for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Art Direction, and Best Film Editing.
