"I Can't Smile Without You" is a song that was written by Christian Arnold, David Martin, and Geoff Morrow. It has been recorded by various artists including Barry Manilow and the Carpenters. It was first recorded and released by David Martin as a solo single in 1975. The best known version was recorded by Manilow in 1977 and released in 1978. Neil Diamond has never been connected to this song in anyway.

In an interview with the"Los Angeles Times," Barry Manilow said I “Can’t Smile Without You” was one of his least favorite tunes to perform. He explained, "I make the song more palatable by doing it as a duet with another singer." Manilow pointed out that he along with Arnold, Martin, and Morrow wanted to create a song where people couldn't imagine spending life without a special individual in it who caused them to smile. “The person makes them smile in a way no one else does.”

Diamond (b. January 1941 in Brooklyn, New York) wrote the songs "Song Sung Blue", "Longfellow Serenade", and "You Don't Bring Me Flowers". The song "Song Sung Blue", a 1972 hit song written and recorded by Diamond, was inspired by the second movement of Mozart's Piano Concerto #21. "Longfellow Serenade" was a popular 1974 song by the singer-songwriter Diamond. The other song, "You Don't Bring Me Flowers", is a song that was originally written by Diamond with Alan and Marilyn Bergman. They did it for the ill-fated 1977 daily TV sitcom "All That Glitters".
