The following films: "The Cincinnati Kid", a 1965 American drama, "In the Heat of the Night", a 1967 American mystery drama, and "Moonstruck", a 1987 romantic comedy drama, are all movies that were directed and/or produced by Norman Jewison. He did not however direct the film "Prince of the City", a 1981 American neo-noir crime drama. This film was co-written and directed by Sidney Lumet, based on Robert Daley's 1978 book "Prince of the City".

The film and the book are about an New York Police Department (NYPD) officer who chooses to expose police corruption for idealistic reasons. The character of Daniel Ciello, played by Treat Williams, was based on real-life NYPD Narcotics Detective Robert Leuci. A large supporting cast features Jerry Orbach as Gus Levy, Bob Balaban as Santimassino, and Lindsay Crouse as Carla Ciello.

"Prince of the City" got mixed theatrical reviews from critics and fans, when it was release in August 1981 by Orion Pictures. Many didn't like the way police officers and criminals were portrayed. In light of this, it was not a commercial success; it almost broke even. At the box office, the film earned about $8,124,257 on a budget of $8.6 million. Notwithstanding its reception, "Prince of the City" was still nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
