At the time of writing (January 2020) three men have held the office of Pope during the 21st century. None of them has been a police officer. However, they all have interesting back-stories.

Pope John Paul II was born Karol Józef Wojtyła on 18 May 1920. He was head of the Catholic Church from 1978 until his death in 2005. In mid-1938, Karol Wojtyła left Wadowice and moved to Kraków, where he enrolled at the Jagiellonian University. While studying such topics as philology and various languages, he acted as a volunteer librarian, performed with various theatrical groups and worked as a playwright.

Pope Benedict XVI was born Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger on 16 April 1927. He was head of the Catholic Church from 2005 until his resignation in 2013. In 1941 Joseph Ratzinger was conscripted into the Hitler Youth under a law dating from March 1939. However, according to his brother, he was an unenthusiastic member who refused to attend meetings.

Pope Francis was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on 17 December 1936. He has been the head of the Catholic Church since 2013 and is the first Jesuit Pope. Before joining the Jesuits, Jorge Bergoglio worked as a bouncer in a nightclub/bar and as a janitor sweeping floors.
