In the "Dexter" TV series, scuba divers find at least 30 dismembered bodies off the coast of Miami, Florida. After they are recovered, the bodies are stored and examined in a field morgue. DNA analysis identifies 18 bodies as those of murderers who escaped the legal justice system. They slipped through the law. The unknown killer of the murderers and other criminals (Dexter Morgan) is dubbed 'The Bay Harbor Butcher'.

The villains who end up on Dexter’s infamous table all die in the same way. The mechanics of the act aren’t important. Each killing adds complexity to the narrative of the series and to Dexter, the main character. For all his moral agonising, viewers have been asked if Dexter should be viewed as a hero or just another serial killer looking to excuse his blood lust. The question offers a good moral debate which the show asks people to decide for themselves.
