The lyrics describe a working-class "downtown man" attempting to woo a wealthy "Uptown Girl". The song was released in September 1983, on Joel's ninth studio album "An Innocent Man"). Billy Joel has noted that the song was inspired by Frankie Valli’s “Rag Doll” (1964).
In an interview with New York City radio host, Howard Stern, Joel said: "The song when it was written was about my then girlfriend, model Elle Macpherson." Later, it turns out that Christie Brinkley, the person who becomes Joel's wife, is the one who appears in the song’s music video.

In the UK, it stayed at the top for 5 weeks, was the second biggest selling single of the year. It sold over a million copies.
