Nicole Kidman was born in 1967 in Honolulu, Hawaii, United States while her Australian parents were temporarily in the United States on student visas. Her mother, Janelle Ann was a nursing student who edited her husband’s books and was a member of the Women’s Electoral Lobby; her father, Anthony Kidman, was a biochemist, clinical psychologist and author.

When Kidman was born, her father was a graduate student at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. The family returned to Australia when she was 4 years old.

Having been born in the American state of Hawaii to Australian parents, Kidman holds dual citizenship of Australia and the United States.

The actress grew up in Sydney, Australia and attended public elementary and a schools. Then she studied at the Phillip Street Theatre in Sydney, alongside the British actress Naomi Watts (born 1968) who had attended the same high school. She also attended the Australian Theatre for Young People. Here she took drama, mime and performing in her teens, finding acting to be refuge. Owning to her fair skin and naturally red hair, the Australian sun forced the young Kidman to rehearse in the halls of the theatre.
