In Season 3, Episode 19, "Class Reunion" two shots of pages from Andy's 1945 high school yearbook reveal his (Andrew Jackson Taylor) and Barney's full names.

Andrew Samuel Griffith (1926-2012) was an actor, singer, stand-up comic on TV and movies in a career that spanned seven decades. Although best known for his role as Sheriff Taylor of the fictional small town of Mayberry, he began his career in TV on the Steve Allen Show and the Ed Sullivan Show in the 1950s, doing stand-up comedy. One of his best-known routines was "What It Was, Was Football", telling a first-person story of a country bumpkin accidentally attending his first football game. An album by the same name containing several humorous takes on football, Shakespeare, and opera followed.

1955 he made his Broadway debut in No Time for Sergeants and earned a Tony Award nomination for his portrayal of an air force draftee. He reprised the role for the 1958 movie after having made a strong film debut in A Face in the Crowd (1957). Griffith received a second Tony nomination for the musical Destry Rides Again (1959).

Post-Mayberry, In 1986, Griffith returned to TV as the title character in the courtroom drama series Matlock, which aired during prime time on NBC from 1986 to 1992 and on ABC from 1993 to 1995. Griffith played Ben Matlock as a folksy yet shrewd defense attorney.

Griffith won a Grammy for a bluegrass-gospel album released in 1997. He also won the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005.
