The 'Christ the Redeemer' statue in Rio de Janeiro cost approximately $250,000 US dollars and took 9 years to build (1922—1931). Today, the cost would roughly be the equivalent of $6.4 million US dollars. People from all over Rio de Janeiro and Brazil gave financially to the complete construction of the statue. Even children gladly gave money. This statue and the US 'Statue of Liberty' cost about the same amount of money.

The statue itself had to be constructed in pieces and carried to the mountain top to be erected. The materials used to build 'Christ the Redeemer' were reinforced concrete and soapstone. This statue currently belongs to the Diocese of Rio de Janeiro. And the diocese has always stated that it is grateful to Cardinal Dom Sebastião Leme, the soul of the project, for his enthusiasm and commitment.

The statue was designed by sculptor Paul Landowski and built by engineer Heitor da Silva Costa in collaboration with Albert Caquot. Sculptor Gheorghe Leonida created the face. It is made from soapstone; the width is 28 m (92 ft), height 30 m (98 ft), and 38 m (125 ft) with its pedestal.

Great consideration and scrupulous actions went into the decision to use The 'Christ the Redeemer', Art Deco design. Several other designs were considered; they included a representation of the Christian cross, a statue of Jesus Christ with a globe in his hands, and a pedestal symbolizing the world. The 'Christ the Redeemer' statue design was picked as the overall best choice.
