The Falkland Islands are an overseas territory of the United Kingdom in the South Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of South America. Since 1999, the group of islands' flag consists of a Blue Ensign with the coat-of-arms of the Falkland Islands. 'Blue Ensign' is the term for a dark blue background with the Union flag of the United Kingdom in the top left corner.

The coat of arms of the Falkland Islands is a shield containing a ram standing on grass above a Tudor ship with five stars on its sail. The ram represents the islands' sheep farming industry. The ship symbolises the flagship 'Desire' which first sighted the islands in the 16th century. English explorer, Sir Thomas Cavendish (1560-1592), spotted the islands during his 1586-1588 circumnavigation of the globe. Below the shield is the motto 'Desire the Right'.

The Falkland coat of arms has been in use since 1948. It was originally superimposed on a white disc until a redesign of the flag in 1999. Between 2nd April and 14th June 1982, the flag was banned by the Argentine military junta and temporarily replaced by the Argentinian flag.

Occasionally an alternative version of the Falkland Islands flag is used. Whilst the design is the same, the background colour is red. Previously, the plain red ensign was used by ships in the waters around the Falklands. In 1999, the coat of arms was added and adopted as the islands' civil ensign.
