The hoopoe appears on the logo of which African university?

Hoopoes are colourful birds found across Africa, Asia, and Europe, notable for their distinctive "crown" of feathers. Formerly considered a single species, the hoopoe has been split into three separate species: the Eurasian hoopoe, Madagascar hoopoe, and the resident African hoopoe.

The University of Johannesburg distinguishes itself from its previous institutions as a new, adaptable and progressive institution. Early on it was decided that UJ did not want a coat of arms and motto, as is custom with other tertiary educational institutions in South Africa. The administration decided to rather opt for a logo and brand identity. The design by Joey Hifi was chosen as the official logo of the university. Present in the design is two hoopoes 'Upupa Africana'. The hoopoe is the official mascot of the UJ Sports Bureau.

The African Hoopoe is an exotic looking bird that is around the same size as a Starling. It measures 25 – 29 centimetres in length, weighs 57 grams and has a wingspan of 44 – 48 centimetres. The plumage is a cinnamon colour with contrasting black and white stripes on their wings and tails. The underparts, head, throat and back are also cinnamon in colour.Their heads have a distinctive crest with long chestnut coloured feathers which have black tips. The crest lies backwards when the bird is resting, however, if alarmed or excited, the crest opens up and displays a beautiful circular shape.The African Hoopoe bird has an oil gland which produces a foul smelling secretion.
