This question is certainly for geography-lovers. Rügen is Germany's largest island by area (926 km²). It is located in the Baltic Sea and is a part of the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The "gateway" of Rügen island is the city of Stralsund. It is connected with the mainland by a road and railway via the Rügen Bridge and Causeway, two routes crossing the two-kilometer-wide Strelasund, a sound of the Baltic Sea.

Rügen has a maximum length of 51.4 km (from north to south), a maximum width of 42.8 km in the south. The population of the island is approximately 77 thousand people. The island is a popular resort due to its fresh sea air and beautiful nature.

In June 2011, UNESCO designated the Jasmund National Park located on the island a World Heritage Site. The park is famous for its beeches and chalk cliffs, for example, King's Chair that is one of the main landmarks of Rügen island.
