The sense of touch is very important for raccoons. They have remarkably sensitive front paws. Their digits are tapered and long, with no webbing between them, which is not typical for a carnivoran. Another distinguishing feature is that two-thirds of the area responsible for sensory perception in the raccoon's cerebral cortex is specialized for the interpretation of tactile impulses, more than in any other animal in the world. Raccoons can differentiate objects without touching them, which helps them to survive in tough environment of the cities and towns.
