He is also recognized as the best-selling recording artist from 1939 to 1943, leading one of the best known big bands (Glenn Miller Orchestra).
The #1 hit of the big-band era (In the Mood) was recorded by Glenn Miller in 1939.
Aged 40, Glenn Miller went missing on the 15th of December, 1944. He was traveling to entertain U.S. troops in France during WWII and his aircraft disappeared in bad weather over the English Channel.

I have been a big Glenn Miller fan since I was small. After WWII, my dad was stationed in Italy. Armed Forces Radio still played all the songs that the GIs from WWII liked, so I learned a lot of them.

A tad subjective I think. Miller was a great band leader and defined a sound like no other. I believe his wife later married std Lawrence whose band played Miller's music with great panache and was privileged to meet the man and his band when they played a gig near where I lived.
