For Whom the Bell Tolls is a novel by Ernest Hemingway published in 1940. It tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American in the International Brigades attached to a republican guerrilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. As a dynamiter, he is assigned to blow up a bridge during an attack on the city of Segovia. The novel is regarded as one of Hemingway's best works.

Few people fail to understand that Spain was not neutral in WW II but supported Italy and Germany with Spain even sending a division of Spanish troops to fight with Germany against the Soviet Union. This was “forgotten” after the war and Spain’s dictator Franco was “wooed"” by the US in order to establish air bases on Spanish soil.
