The Oracle is a fictional character appearing in "The Matrix" science fiction film franchise. In the first three films, the Oracle is explained as a program designed to investigate the human psyche. The Oracle is a female fictional character and has been created by The Wachowskis, directors and producers of the films. She is portrayed by Gloria Foster in the first two films "The Matrix" (1999) and "The Matrix Reloaded" (2003). Mary Alice plays the role in the third film "The Matrix Revolutions" (2003).

In all three films, whether the Oracle's power of prediction is deterministic or not is a concept given much treatment. She herself claims that she lacks the ability to see past her own choice. She says that no one, including herself, can see past a choice they do not understand. It becomes clear in the films that her power cannot be used to predict ultimate consequences. Neo, who possesses free will, defies the Architect and does things that others believed could never be done or were totally impossible to accomplish.
