'Paint Your Wagon' is a 1951 Broadway musical with music by Frederick Loewe (1901-1988) and lyrics by Alan J. Lerner (1918-1986). It tells the story of a miner and his daughter living in a mining-camp during the Gold Rush-era in California (1848-1855). Popular songs from the musical include 'Wand'rin' Star' and 'I Talk to the Trees'. The musical first appeared on Broadway in 1951 before arriving in the West End (London) in 1953. It was later made into a film in 1969.

After searching for many years, Ben Rumson and his daughter, Jennifer, finally strike gold and set up Rumson Town. Soon, the town grows to a population of 400, all men, except Jennifer who falls in love with a young Mexican prospector, Julio Valveras. The other men feel uncomfortable with a woman's presence and demand Ben sends her away to school. When Jennifer later returns to the town, it has become a ghost town and Julio has disappeared. For the remains of the show, Jennifer searches for Julio and is finally reunited with the man she loves.

'I Talk to the Trees' is sung by Julio and Jennifer in Act One of the musical. In the film, it is sung by the actor Clint Eastwood. 'Wand'rin' Star' was sung by Ben Rumson towards the end of the performance. It is about his life on the move from one place to another in search of gold.

Lerner and Loewe worked together for three decades on various musical creations, including 'Paint Your Wagon', 'My Fair Lady', 'Brigadoon', 'Camelot' and the musical film 'Gigi'.
